Barbecue restaurant Q39 has announced a Sept. 1 opening for its new Overland Park location. But owner Rob Magee said it could open even sooner.
Magee purchased the former Hayward’s Pit Bar-B-Que building and land at 11051 Antioch Road in Overland Park. He has spent the last year on a major interior and exterior renovation, including new landscaping and a new parking lot. Arizona-based Realm Architecture + Design designed the original location and also designed the new 7,100-square-foot restaurant with a similar urban-rustic decor.
The dining room will seat more than 200 people. It also will have a full-service patio seating up to 50 people on the north side and a full-service bar seating up to 20. It will have a large to-go area.
Q39 offers traditional and innovative barbecue items. Classics include certified Black Angus beef brisket and smoked and char-grilled chicken. Innovative items include the popular wood-fired grilled salmon salad, smoked chicken tortilla, pulled pork tacos, house-made chipotle sausage and a barbecue veggie burger.
Magee has won many barbecue awards since he started competing in 2002. But he long wanted to have a brick-and-mortar location where he could showcase his barbecue for public consumption — and still at competition quality. The first Q39 barbecue restaurant and bar opened in April 2014 at 1000 W. 39th St., giving it the 39 in the name. But the new location also will be called Q39.
New owners relocated Hayward’s to Lenexa in early 2016.
