Q39 made its debut to the Kansas City food scene just over a year ago and business is booming. What began as a hobby quickly turned into a passion for Rob Magee, owner and executive chef at Q39. With its barn doors and wooden décor, Q39’s rustic chic look fits in perfectly with the Westport scene. Its beautiful open kitchen design allows for patrons to have a front row seat to the barbecuing action, unlike the traditional, hidden-away barbecue pits at most places.
Even on a Monday night at 9:00 p.m. Q39 is packed with locals and non-locals alike, trying to partake in Magee’s culinary vision: a combination of traditional barbecue flavor with the finest made-from-scratch ingredients. While you wait for your table, be sure to enjoy the 12 beers on tap, including local favorites from Boulevard Brewery, KC Bier Co, and Tallgrass Brewery.
Décor and beer aside, let’s talk food. One does not typically go to a barbecue establishment and order a burger, but the Burnt End burger at Q39 is no typical burger. Topped with sliced burnt ends, spicy pickle slaw, and classic sauce it is no surprise that it’s an award winning burger. The combination of cabbage, fresh cut jalapeños, and burnt ends not only delivers an explosion of flavor, but the perfect bun to crunch ratio.
If you are seeking a more traditional sense of the word ‘barbecue,’ be sure to order the Judge’s Plate. The Judge’s plate includes Q spare ribs, sliced brisket, pulled pork, smoked chicken, AND sausage, so be sure to bring your appetite.
Regardless of what you order at Q39, you will not leave disappointed. Take a look around the restaurant and you will notice that 50 percent of the wall décor are medals, ribbons, and trophies all proving that Q39 is serving up some of the best barbecue around in a city with fierce competition.
