KANSAS CITY, MO (KTVI) – It’s time to explore a pair of the Kansas City area’s rising hot spot.
Take a swing at Top Golf Overland Park and feast on the fare at Q-39. Before falling into a food coma, we decided to work up an appetite at Top Golf. As you quickly learn, this is not your grandfather’s driving range.
“This is a very unique entertainment venue. One, because yes, it’s attached to a technology-based driving range, but two, you don’t have to come in here and swing a club to have a good time,” said Jack Sheehan, marketing manager at Top Golf Overland Park.
“I don’t know anything about golf, so I didn’t know how this was going to be. I think golfing is boring honestly, but I’m having a blast. The environment is really laid back and fun. They have great food. It’s awesome,” said Top Golf patron Sierra Smith.
Top Golf may be best described as the product of mixing a driving range with a bowling alley, bar and grill, game room, and nightclub.
“Each bay fits up to six people. You divide the cost of play between six people. You do the math, it’s really not all that expensive,” Sheehan said.
Once you and your group secure a spot, you choose how you want to play. Each ball has a chip in it that tracks your shot and each target has its own corresponding score.
“You go in a rotation, you get a fair amount of swings. You really do get bang for your buck. Each of the targets are constructed like a dart board and that’s what really adds some of that fun experience and atmosphere to playing the game itself when you come in here.” added Sheehan.
In addition to its three bars, Top Golf Overland Park also has a kitchen pumping out a variety of tasty treats. You’ll never go thirsty or hungry with this attentive wait staff.
“The first time I came here I was expecting something kind of thrown together, but it’s actually really good and it’s really not that expensive surprisingly,” said Kaleb McQuillan.
From golf clubs to solid grub, don’t leave KC without a trip to Q-39.
“Making things from scratch is really important here. No microwaves in the kitchen. Desserts made from scratch. Dressings made from scratch. When you come here you get the freshest and best food,” said Q-39 owner and chef Rob Magee.
In two short years, the folks at Q-39 have smoked and sizzled their way into the hearts of Kansas City’s barbecue loving community.
“The brisket plate is dynamite for the barbecue enthusiasts, you’ve got to try it. the ribs are great, they’ve got a nice honey glaze on them with rub on the backside so there’s three layers of flavor on them,” added Magee.
Some other stand-out menu items include the homemade sausage, fresh cut French fries, and their burnt end burger.
“I’ve pretty much hit every barbecue joint in the KC-MO, KC-K area and by far when you come here, this is what barbecue should be. This is the definition of barbecue.” said Q-39 patron Nick Creten.
Between Top Golf and Q-39, this is the definition of a potential road-trip. So load up the car, fill up your tank, and bring an appetite for food and fun. It’s all less than five hours west of St. Louis on Interstate 70 in Kansas City.
